What Happens in Vegas, Also Happens in Mesa

The Cubs lost a pair of games today to the Cincinnati Reds 9-8 in Las Vegas and 7-6 at Hohokam.Carlos Silva started at Hohokam and definitely wanted to show something after being hit pretty good of late.  Silva did that setting down the first 6 batters of today's game in order, he was then tagged for a couple runs in the 3rd, and came back with another 1-2-3 inning in the 4th. Silva was hit hard again in the 5th allowing a couple more runs on a Yonder Alonso triple and a Jeremy Hermida home run.  So perhaps a step in the right direction but Silva's early verbal claims of a starting spot are still in doubt. Todd "Shoulders" Wellemeyer followed Silva allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 4 hits along with 3 walks in his 2 innings. Cubs Youngster Trey McNutt followed with a scoreless inning as did Justin Berg in the 9th.

At the plate Marlon Byrd continued his torrid spring going 2 for 3, Aramis Ramirez had a couple hits including a double and a run scored, Darwin Barney starting at shortstop had a couple hits and an RBI. Fernando Perez came through with a big hit and 3 RBI's. Fan favorite Bobby Scales had 3 hits including a double with a couple RBI's and two runs scored.

Other plays of note: Scales also made a nice diving stab of a hard Yonder Alonso grounder up the middle then jumped to his feet and gunned him out. Jim Adduci who started in RF made a highlight reel catch going to the top of the RF wall taking a certain extra base hit away from Brandon Phillips. Adduci crashed hard into the wall and then the ground but held on to the ball.

Things you don't see everyday: Rick Hokanson performed today's National Anthem on a harmonica. Today's split squad game meant that we had a slate of minor league additions, many of whom got into the game for the Cubs, including Jae-Hoon Ha, Matt Cerda, DJ LeMahieu, Marwin Gonzalez, Kyler Burke, Evan Crawford, and one of my new favorite names, Rebel Ridling. Former Cubs outfielder Willie Wilson threw out a ceremonial pitch and the  Chicago Cubs Booster Club of Central Illinois sang the 7th inning stretch.
